Azerbaijan’s State Security Service (SSS) says it has prevented a planned terrorist attack targeting a foreign embassy in Baku.
According to an official statement by the State Security Service of Azerbaijan, three Azerbaijani citizens were detained during a joint operational and investigative operation on suspicion of preparing an attack motivated by religious extremism.
The suspects – identified as Ilgar Guliyev (born 2000), Amin Piriyev (born 2005), and Elvin Alizadeh (born 2005) – allegedly maintained contacts with members of the Islamic State’s Khorasan branch and acted as a group following prior coordination, the agency said.
Investigators claim the individuals acquired items intended to be used as weapons and were detained as they approached the area where the foreign diplomatic mission is located.
Criminal charges have been filed under multiple articles of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code, including provisions related to the preparation of terrorist acts committed by an organized group on religious grounds. A court has ordered pre-trial detention for all three suspects.
The SSS emphasized that investigative and operational measures in the case are ongoing.
