The Zangezur Corridor and Iran’s Escalating Rhetoric

TEHRAN / BAKU — July 27, 2025 — Tensions surrounding the Zangezur Corridor have reignited in Iran following a series of developments, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s remarks at the 3rd Shusha Global Media Forum and a report by Spanish outlet Periodista Digital suggesting a secret trilateral deal between Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States. According to the report, an American company would administer the corridor for 99 years.

These revelations have sparked a wave of reaction in Tehran. A recent video by the YouTube channel Free Iran highlights how Iranian state-linked media have intensified coverage of the corridor, framing it as a national security threat. “Despite Iran’s domestic challenges, media outlets publish daily pieces on Zangezur, portraying it as a vital issue for the Islamic Republic,” the video notes.

Iran’s semi-official Fars News Agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), described the corridor as “not merely a transportation route, but a matter of existential importance for Iran.”

Even after the Armenian government denied the Periodista Digital report, Iranian outlets continued to push alarmist headlines featuring phrases like “serious threat” or “warning signs.” Much of the coverage leans on conspiracy theories, portraying the corridor as part of a Western-Israeli plot to encircle, isolate, and ultimately fracture Iran. Azerbaijan, often framed as Israel’s key ally, is frequently targeted with hostile rhetoric, disinformation, and even calls for military response.
