A rare bilateral meeting between parliamentarians from Azerbaijan and Armenia in Istanbul is a clear signal of support for the peace process in the South Caucasus, the President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Pere Joan Pons Sampietro, has said.

Speaking to Turkey’s Anadolu agency, Pons noted that he had held talks with both delegations and welcomed their decision to sit down together on the margins of the OSCE PA’s 23rd Autumn Session.

“I am very proud that the delegations of Azerbaijan and Armenia are holding a bilateral meeting for the first time at these sessions in Istanbul,” he said, adding that parliamentary diplomacy plays an important role in advancing peace.

The bilateral meeting between the Azerbaijani and Armenian parliamentary delegations took place on 18 November during the OSCE PA session in Istanbul. While no details of the discussions were made public, OSCE officials framed the encounter as a positive step that complements ongoing diplomatic efforts to normalize relations between the two countries.
