On January 31, the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, held a phone conversation with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian.

During the call, both sides reaffirmed that relations between Azerbaijan and Iran are based on the principles of friendship, brotherhood, and good-neighborliness, underpinned by longstanding historical, ethnic, and religious ties between the two nations.

The presidents positively recalled previous visits, high-level meetings, and substantive negotiations, noting their contribution to the steady development of bilateral relations. It was also emphasized that construction work on the automobile bridge over the Araz River, linking the Agbend and Kalaleh crossing points, is progressing according to schedule.

President Ilham Aliyev expressed concern over the current situation in the region and stated that Azerbaijan is ready to contribute to easing tensions. He underlined Baku’s consistent position that regional issues should be resolved through dialogue, negotiations, and mutual understanding.

President Masoud Pezeshkian, in turn, thanked the Azerbaijani leader for the initiative and the constructive approach.

The phone conversation included an exchange of views on various aspects of Azerbaijan–Iran relations, as well as possible future joint steps. The sides agreed to maintain ongoing contacts at the highest level.
