The Zangezur Corridor holds transformative potential not only for Azerbaijan, but for the entire region, said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during a post-visit interview with journalists following his trip to Azerbaijan.
Erdoğan emphasized that Turkey sees the corridor as more than a geopolitical asset—it is a pillar of a geo-economic revolution.
“The opening of the Zangezur Corridor will be a strategic step for the Middle Corridor. Once operational, Turkish goods will be able to reach Central Asia and China more swiftly via the Caspian Sea, while cargo from Europe heading to China will begin to transit through Turkey. The Middle Corridor, by its nature, links a wide geography from the south through to us and Azerbaijan. It also integrates with routes originating in China. That’s the scale of its significance,” Erdoğan stated.

He added that all relevant steps are being taken with precision, and railway infrastructure is a key part of the Zangezur route, which will significantly boost its logistical importance.
“The Zangezur railway will enhance freight connectivity. President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan also places great importance on this project,” Erdoğan noted.
Strategic Benefits Beyond Borders
The Turkish leader further highlighted that once the Zangezur Corridor is operational, projects like the Kars-Iğdır-Nakhchivan railway and Turkish investments in reconstruction efforts in Karabakh will gain greater traction and efficiency.
“The world is changing, and this change demands new strategies. Keeping pace with global shifts opens doors to opportunity and prosperity. A peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan would dramatically shift the regional dynamic,” Erdoğan said.
He concluded by stating that a future peace deal could usher in historic opportunities:
“With peace, we’ll witness the opening of a new chapter—one of shared progress. The revival of a region long left underdeveloped by conflict will become a textbook case of successful regional transformation.”
