Why Azerbaijani Mothers Are Turning Away from Breastfeeding

Every year, from August 1–7, countries around the world mark World Breastfeeding Week, established in 1992 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF to highlight the irreplaceable role of breastfeeding in infant health and promote its preservation in society.

Breast milk is considered the gold standard of nutrition for infants up to six months old, fully meeting their energy and nutrient needs. Between 6–12 months, it provides about half of a child’s nutritional requirements, and between 13–24 months — around one-third. For premature babies, its value is even greater, helping weight gain, immunity, and reducing infection risks. WHO recommends starting breastfeeding within the first hour after birth and continuing for at least two years, or longer if possible.

Sharp Decline in Azerbaijan
Official data shows breastfeeding rates in Azerbaijan have dropped nearly 20% in the past year. According to UNICEF, only 28% of infants in the country are breastfed — meaning the majority are fed formula, posing health and developmental risks.

Pediatrician Vagif Garayev told Bizim.Media that breast milk is crucial for a child’s immune system and development:

“In recent years, the number of mothers using formula has increased fivefold. Often, it’s not due to a lack of milk but a lack of information and support. Mothers must understand that breastfeeding is the best thing they can do for their child.”

Garayev noted the importance of colostrum — the first milk produced after birth, rich in antibodies — in building a newborn’s immunity.

“Skipping this stage is a major mistake. Don’t be swayed by formula advertising. If you truly love your baby, don’t deprive them of this protection,” he said.

The Ministry of Health has been asked to comment on what measures are being taken during World Breastfeeding Week to address the decline.
