Whispers of a White House Summit: Will Aliyev and Pashinyan Meet in Washington This Week?

Speculation is swirling in Baku, Yerevan, and Washington over a possible high‑stakes meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in the U.S. capital — a gathering that could mark a turning point in the South Caucasus peace process.

The buzz began after Washington‑based journalist Alex Raufoglu posted on X (formerly Twitter) that both leaders were expected to meet at the White House as early as this Friday, hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump.

His tweet quickly spread across numerous Azerbaijani news outlets — only to be mysteriously deleted from most of them hours later, further fueling speculation.

According to Raufoglu’s report, the meeting could produce a joint declaration signaling a breakthrough toward a long‑awaited peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan. If confirmed, it would be the first time the two leaders meet in Washington since the latest phase of peace talks began.

So far, neither government has issued an official statement. Armenia’s Prime Minister’s Office said it could “neither confirm nor deny” the reports, adding that any information about foreign visits would be announced only through an official press release. Azerbaijani officials have remained silent.

Whether the summit happens this week or not, the sudden disappearance of the original reports has only deepened intrigue — and raised expectations that something significant may be in the works behind closed doors in Washington.
