Washington Think-Tank Sees Rare Chance for Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline

BAKU, September 8

The Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline could reshape Eurasia’s energy and political landscape, according to Hudson Institute senior fellow Luke Coffey, writing in Arab News. He said the project fits Washington’s broader “Trump Route” vision, linking Europe with Central Asia via the South Caucasus, and could help the EU cut reliance on Russian supplies while opening new markets for U.S. energy firms.

Coffey noted that Moscow and Tehran long resisted the pipeline under the guise of environmental concerns, but shifting realities – Russia’s war in Ukraine and Iran’s deepening isolation – have created a rare window.

If realized, the project would secure Europe’s energy needs, generate new revenue for Turkmenistan, and reinforce regional stability. He pointed to President Ilham Aliyev’s recent visit to Turkmenistan, following talks in Washington, as part of efforts to advance the initiative.
