Reports of unusual behavior among post-surgery patients are spreading rapidly across Azerbaijani social media.
Users describe cases of depression, confusion, and even aggression following surgical procedures – raising questions about whether these psychological changes are normal side effects or signs of medical negligence.
Medical expert Adil Geybulla explained that such reactions often stem from the effects of anesthesia on the brain and nervous system.
“Anesthesia consists of three main components. If the dosage of any one of them is improperly adjusted or administered at the wrong time, it can negatively affect the patient’s brain. Sometimes a person enters the operating room fully coherent, but after the procedure displays aggression, disorientation, or psychiatric symptoms. These cases are often linked to medical errors or misuse of anesthesia,” Geybulla said.
He warned that chemical changes caused by anesthesia can persist long after surgery:
“Alterations in brain chemistry may last for days or even weeks. That’s why patients should be kept under psychological supervision after surgery, and provided with psychotherapy if needed.”
Geybulla stressed that both doctors and family members must pay attention not only to the physical recovery but also to the mental state of patients in the postoperative period. Neglecting early signs of emotional instability, he cautioned, can lead to long-term psychiatric disorders and social problems.
