Velizade: Armenia’s Failure to Honor U.S. Agreements Could Have Serious Consequences

Baku-Tbilisi, August 13

If Armenia fails to implement the agreements reached in Washington on August 8, it will be held accountable to the United States, political analyst Ilgar Velizade told Report.

He noted that following the Second Karabakh War, Azerbaijan’s diplomatic and military gains have reshaped the region’s geopolitical landscape. This has led to direct bilateral contacts between Baku and Yerevan and the coordination of a peace treaty.

Velizade said global powers are acting in line with these new realities to safeguard their own interests. “The U.S. is also working within this framework, putting forward initiatives such as the TRIPP project (Zangezur Corridor). This aligns with Azerbaijan’s interests, particularly by ensuring a land connection between Nakhchivan and the rest of the country — one of Baku’s key demands,” he explained.

He stressed that how Armenia manages its relations with Russia and Iran regarding the U.S. presence in the region is its internal matter.

“We do not interfere in other countries’ domestic affairs and remain focused on our long-term interests. Agreements signed with Washington’s involvement will be implemented. Otherwise, Yerevan will have to answer not only to Azerbaijan but also to the White House. Prime Minister Pashinyan understands that problems with President Trump could have serious consequences, so the commitments will likely be fully honored,” Velizade said.
