The July 10 meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Abu Dhabi is being viewed as a step toward finalizing a peace agreement reached in principle this past March.
Speaking to the U.S. bureau of Report, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said that António Guterres is closely monitoring the ongoing positive developments between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“We welcome this dialogue between two countries that have experienced long-standing tensions,” Dujarric stated. “We recall the agreement reached in March on a peace deal and view this meeting as a step toward solidifying alignment on the text. The Secretary-General is following these processes very closely.”
The UN has repeatedly emphasized its support for regional peace and stability in the South Caucasus, encouraging continued diplomatic engagement and confidence-building measures.
