The U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly close to brokering a landmark peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia—an achievement hailed by Republican Senator Steve Daines as a “historic breakthrough.”
Writing in The Wall Street Journal, Daines described the expected agreement as “a major step toward stability that would benefit not just the South Caucasus, but also the broader international community.”
“This would be a remarkable accomplishment,” the senator noted. “It would open new paths for regional and global peace, as well as economic benefits that stretch far beyond the two countries involved.”
Daines criticized earlier diplomatic efforts by third-party states and international organizations, arguing they were either ineffective or lacked strategic foresight. He also took aim at previous U.S. administrations, saying they had failed to treat the region and its peace efforts as a priority.
In contrast, Daines praised Trump for what he described as a “hands-on approach” to fostering growth and geopolitical stability.
“The imminent signing of this agreement by the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan will serve not only as a powerful symbol of reconciliation,” he wrote, “but as a catalyst for peace and prosperity across the South Caucasus and beyond.”
While no official date has been announced, diplomatic sources suggest a formal signing ceremony could take place in the coming weeks.
