July 17, 2025 | ANKARA — Turkey played a critical behind-the-scenes role in securing a ceasefire in Syria following a wave of Israeli airstrikes, according to sources cited by Al Arabiya.
Turkish intelligence officials reportedly held direct talks with Syrian Druze leaders amid rising tensions in the region. In parallel, Turkey’s intelligence chief İbrahim Kalın engaged in high-level discussions with his counterparts in the U.S., Israel, and Syria, as well as with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
The diplomatic effort came in the wake of heightened military activity and fears of broader regional destabilization. While the full terms of the ceasefire remain undisclosed, sources indicate that Turkey’s ability to speak simultaneously to regional rivals — and maintain dialogue with Damascus — was instrumental in de-escalating the crisis.
Ankara’s intervention reflects its growing assertiveness as a regional mediator and its strategic interest in maintaining stability along its southern border. The development marks one of the rare instances of successful trilateral communication involving Syria, Israel, and Turkey — countries with long-standing political and military frictions.
