Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has described the U.S.-initiated peace negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia as “very important” for the South Caucasus.

“The liberation of the territories meant the frozen conflict had to be concluded with a peace treaty. The sides have been negotiating for many years. Yesterday in Washington, the peace agreement was initialed, and we look forward to its signing,” he stressed.

Fidan said Ankara is encouraged by every step toward sustainable peace in the South Caucasus.

“Turkey supported the liberation of Azerbaijani lands and now fully supports peace, inspiring both sides to take bold steps and welcoming the U.S. contribution to this process,” he added.

The Turkish foreign minister also underlined the strategic importance of the Zangezur Corridor, saying that if implemented, it would become a vital segment of a continuous transport route from Europe deep into Asia.

“The Zangezur Corridor will be a key link connecting Turkey with the Turkic world via the Caucasus and the Caspian Sea, as well as linking Turkic states with Europe through Turkey and onward to Asia. This will be a multifunctional route. I believe the agreement reached in Washington is a very important and positive development, and I hope the corridor will be implemented in the near future,” Fidan said.
