Turkey Set to Expand Air Fleet with Eurofighter Typhoon Jets in Multibillion-Dollar Deal

ISTANBUL, July 22, 2025 — Turkey is expected to finalize a preliminary multibillion-dollar agreement this week for the purchase of Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, according to sources cited by The Wall Street Journal.

The potential deal, estimated at approximately $5.6 billion, may include the acquisition of up to 40 aircraft manufactured by the Eurofighter consortium, which includes Airbus, BAE Systems, and Leonardo. While the final number and specific configuration of the jets are still under negotiation, discussions have reportedly gained significant momentum.

Sources familiar with the matter say the deal is likely to be announced during the International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF), taking place in Istanbul from July 22 to 27.

The move comes amid Turkey’s ongoing efforts to modernize its air force and diversify its defense partnerships, especially as its F-16 upgrade program has faced delays and restrictions.

A final agreement would mark a significant step in defense cooperation between Turkey and the United Kingdom, as well as a notable development for the Eurofighter program, which continues to seek new buyers outside its original consortium countries.
