Turkey Expands Defense Production Footprint in Azerbaijan

Must read

Turkey is expanding its defense industry presence in Azerbaijan, as another Turkish defense manufacturer begins operations in the country.

According to the State Tax Service under the Ministry of Economy, “Makine ve Kimya Azerbaijan” LLC has been officially registered and will soon launch production.

The move marks another step in deepening bilateral defense cooperation, which has rapidly grown since the 2020 Karabakh war. Turkish defense companies have already been active in joint ventures involving drones, munitions, and maintenance systems, and the new facility is expected to strengthen local manufacturing capacity.

Economist Khalid Karimli told Sfera.az that nearly all modern states seek to develop their own defense production, but only a few achieve it successfully.

“They used to sell us drones at normal market prices – they didn’t have to. Such high-tech products are shared only between allies. Local production means we can later export these goods, create jobs, and bring in foreign currency. Most importantly, it allows Azerbaijan to access advanced weapons at more affordable prices,” he said.

Karimli added that the expansion of the defense sector has wider economic benefits.

“It’s not just about military needs or revenue. Building this industry helps form local expertise, drives growth in related fields, and provides new opportunities in the regions. Workers gain knowledge, and entire support industries develop around it.”

The launch of Makine ve Kimya Azerbaijan reinforces the strategic defense partnership between Baku and Ankara, combining Turkey’s technological experience with Azerbaijan’s growing industrial base.
