The Gaza Peace Summit opened today in the Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh, bringing together world leaders to discuss the Middle East peace process. U.S. President Donald Trump personally welcomed the heads of state and government attending the forum, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
According to the Azerbaijani news agency Report, President Aliyev arrived in Egypt on a working visit at the invitation of Presidents Trump and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to take part in the summit aimed at stabilizing the Middle East and advancing peace efforts in Gaza.
In his address, President Trump said the United States had succeeded in stopping the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, recalling his meeting with both leaders in Washington earlier this year.
“When I met them in the Oval Office, they were sitting on opposite sides. The war between the two countries had lasted for 31 years, but when we finished our work, they hugged each other. Now they are friends and get along very well. So I want to thank you both – this is incredible,” Trump said.
The Sharm el-Sheikh summit, co-chaired by Egypt and the United States, focuses on achieving a lasting ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian relief, and a broader framework for Middle East peace. The participation of Azerbaijan’s president highlights Baku’s growing diplomatic role in regional and interfaith dialogue, particularly after its recent normalization with Armenia.
