Former U.S. President Donald Trump has dismissed Elon Musk’s announcement of a new political party as “ridiculous”, brushing off the tech billionaire’s plan as a distraction that won’t go anywhere.
Speaking to reporters on July 6 before departing New Jersey, Trump responded bluntly when asked about Musk’s recently unveiled “America” Party:
“I think the idea of creating a third party is ridiculous. We’ve had tremendous success with the Republican Party,” he said. “The United States has always had a two-party system — and I believe a third party would only create confusion.”
Trump added a jab at Musk, suggesting the Tesla and SpaceX CEO is free to “have his fun,” but firmly insisted that no third-party effort in American politics has ever truly worked.
Musk, who launched the “America” Party following a popular online poll on X (formerly Twitter), framed it as a necessary response to corruption, out-of-control spending, and a broken two-party system. But Trump’s comments make clear he sees the move as a sideshow rather than a real political threat.
The former president’s reaction comes amid growing tensions between the two, as Musk recently distanced himself from Trump, criticized his fiscal policies, and even endorsed the idea of another impeachment.
While Musk has a loyal online following and massive media presence, Trump’s dismissal underscores the steep uphill battle any third party faces in challenging the entrenched Republican-Democrat duopoly — especially heading into the heated 2024 election cycle.
