Trump Issues 50-Day Ultimatum on Ukraine Peace Deal, Threatens 100% Tariffs on Russia

WASHINGTON, July 14, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a stark ultimatum during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, warning that unless a peace agreement is reached on Ukraine within 50 days, the United States will impose sweeping 100% tariffs on Russian goods and secondary sanctions on countries purchasing Russian oil.

“We will implement very harsh tariffs — about 100 percent — if no agreement is reached within 50 days,” Trump said, describing the measures as “secondary tariffs.” The statement was confirmed by the White House and cited by Reuters.

Arms Deal with Europe

In parallel, Trump announced a major weapons transfer to Ukraine, coordinated jointly with the European Union. Under the deal, Europe will bear the financial burden while the U.S. supplies the arms, including Patriot missile systems — not just missiles but full batteries.

Some European countries will hand over their existing Patriot air defense systems to Kyiv, while Washington will replenish their stockpiles with newly manufactured units.

The arrangement is being facilitated through NATO channels and coordinated by U.S. Permanent Representative to the Alliance, Jeffrey Whitaker. According to Trump, this agreement “gives a chance” for peace in Ukraine.

Congressional Bypass and Sanctions Outlook

Trump emphasized that the imposition of tariffs would not require congressional approval. As for the Senate bill proposing a new sanctions package against Russia, the administration is reportedly unsure whether such legislation is necessary.

“I am very unhappy with Russia,” Trump stated, adding that a peace deal “should have been concluded long ago, but instead, it’s still being debated.”

Despite the pressure tactics, Trump reiterated Washington’s interest in a lasting peace in Ukraine and expressed hope that punitive measures can still be avoided.

“Friendly” Talks with Putin

In a notable aside, Trump mentioned he maintains frequent communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We talk often, and it’s always very pleasant,” he said, adding that Russia has “incredible potential,” especially in terms of trade.

The 50-day countdown marks a dramatic new phase in Trump’s Ukraine policy — one that couples economic leverage with military coordination, while keeping diplomatic channels open with Moscow.
