Tragedy Strikes as Zira Youth Player Farid Shahverdiyev Drowns at Beach

BAKU, July 17 — Azerbaijani football community is in mourning following the tragic death of 15-year-old Farid Shahverdiyev, a promising player from Zira FC’s U-16 academy team, who drowned while swimming at a beach earlier today.

The incident occurred during what was reported to be a personal outing, not an official club activity. Zira FC confirmed the news on its official social media platforms, expressing deep sorrow over the sudden loss. “We are devastated to share that our U-16 team player, Farid Shahverdiyev, has passed away as a result of drowning. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.

Farid was considered one of the rising talents within Zira’s youth academy, known for his technical skills and strong work ethic on the pitch. Coaches and teammates have remembered him as a dedicated athlete with a bright future in Azerbaijani football.

Drowning remains a serious concern in Azerbaijan, particularly during the summer months.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact location or circumstances of the accident, and it is unclear whether lifeguards or emergency responders were present at the time. An investigation is reportedly underway.

The Azerbaijan Football Federation and several local clubs have issued messages of condolence. Moments of silence are expected at upcoming youth and professional matches across the country in memory of Shahverdiyev.

The tragedy has also reignited calls for improved safety measures on public beaches and greater awareness among youth athletes during off-season or recreational activities.
