TEHRAN, August 18, 2025 — Iran has been assured that no military forces from third countries will be stationed in the South Caucasus, a pledge included in the draft peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said at a press conference today in Tehran.
Baghaei stressed that the peace deal, once finalized, would pave the way for long-term security and stability in the region — a development Iran fully supports.
He underlined that the creation of new transport routes in the South Caucasus must not alter the region’s geopolitical balance:
“We are closely monitoring the involvement of extra-regional actors in the South Caucasus. The establishment of transport corridors must not undermine internationally recognized borders or change the geopolitical landscape of the region,” Baghaei said.
According to him, Yerevan has also given assurances to Tehran that its cooperation with U.S. companies will take place only through Armenian firms and U.S. entities registered under Armenian law.
“Iran does not view foreign interference or the involvement of military forces from outside the region as useful. On the contrary, we believe it will lead to further geopolitical complications. We were assured that no foreign troops will be deployed in the region, as explicitly stated in Article 12 of the draft peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Baghaei added.
