Tbilisi, October 29
Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili has voiced support for the ruling party’s initiative to seek a constitutional ban on several opposition parties, including the United National Movement (UNM) founded by former president Mikheil Saakashvili.
As Report cited Georgian Public Broadcaster, Kavelashvili endorsed the Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia party’s decision to petition the Constitutional Court to outlaw three opposition movements accused of receiving foreign funding and undermining the country’s political environment.
“When they [the opposition] deliberately harm the political landscape with foreign financing, in my view, there are legitimate grounds for such political parties not to exist in our political space,” Kavelashvili said.
The statement has sparked heated debate in Tbilisi, as critics warn that such a move could intensify political polarization and further strain Georgia’s democratic image ahead of next year’s parliamentary elections.
