SOCAR’s Urea Plant Exports to Over 15 Countries as Production Hits New High

BAKU, July 21 — The urea plant operated by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) is exporting fertilizer products to more than 15 countries, according to the facility’s production chief, Shohrat Mirzayev.

Speaking to reporters, Mirzayev noted that key export destinations include Turkey, Georgia, the United States, Argentina, and Brazil. “India is one of the world’s largest fertilizer producers, yet we are also exporting urea fertilizers there,” he added, highlighting the plant’s growing global reach.

SOCAR’s urea plant, located in the Sumgayit Chemical Industrial Park, has an annual production capacity of 650,000–660,000 tons. In 2024, the plant exceeded 652,000 tons in total output.

“Our target is to achieve even greater production volumes,” Mirzayev said. “The plant fully meets the domestic demand. Initially, the project envisioned that 30% of production would go to the local market and 70% for export. However, with current efficiency, only 20% is needed to satisfy internal consumption.”

The SOCAR urea plant plays a crucial role in diversifying Azerbaijan’s petrochemical exports and reducing reliance on oil revenues. Its ability to penetrate competitive markets such as India and the U.S. is seen as a sign of the product’s quality and the country’s growing manufacturing capabilities in the non-oil sector.
