School Buses in Azerbaijan: A Long-Delayed Solution Still on Hold

In most developed countries, school transport systems are standard, helping ease traffic congestion and supporting working parents. Yet in Azerbaijan, despite years of public discussion, a nationwide school bus system remains absent.

MP Jeyhun Mammadov has raised concerns, saying the lack of school transportation poses significant challenges for families and society.

“This issue is becoming increasingly visible. Most parents are forced to drive their children to school daily, which only worsens traffic congestion in Baku and other major cities during rush hour,” he said.

According to Mammadov, financial and technical barriers are the main reasons for the delay.
“Budget limitations play a role, no doubt. However, once schools are transformed into public legal entities, we’ll be in a better position to take concrete steps. A school bus system would reduce the traffic burden and improve daily life for parents and society as a whole,” he noted.

The Azerbaijani government has announced plans to establish a safe and comfortable school transportation system between 2025 and 2030 for students in preschool and general education institutions.
