Russia will deliver another 132 railcars of wheat to Armenia by the end of January 2026 via the recently restored railway corridor through Azerbaijan, the Russian Transport Ministry announced on Thursday.

Officials also said Moscow is considering using the route for other categories of cargo.

The first shipment – more than 1,000 tons of wheat – was sent from Dimitrovgrad in Russia’s Ulyanovsk region and traveled through Azerbaijani territory before crossing into Georgia and entering Armenia.

The cargo will be unloaded at the Dalarik station, part of the South Caucasus Railway network, the ministry said.

“The route has proven operational, and by late January 2026, 132 more railcars carrying wheat are expected to follow,” the ministry’s statement noted. “Further logistics options, including the transportation of other goods, are being developed.”

The opening of this corridor marks the first instance since the 1990s that freight shipments from Russia to Armenia have transited through Azerbaijan, a move seen as an important step toward restoring regional trade connectivity after decades of disruption.
