BAKU, July 17 — Azerbaijani champions Qarabağ FK have bolstered their defense with the signing of Moroccan international centre-back Sami Mmaee.
The 28-year-old joins the Aghdam-based club from Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb and will wear the number 3 shirt. Qarabağ confirmed the transfer in an official statement on Wednesday, though contract details have not been disclosed.
Mmaee brings considerable experience to Qarabağ’s back line. Born in Belgium, he represented Belgium at youth level before switching allegiance to Morocco. He has earned multiple caps for the Moroccan national team and was part of the squad that won the 2020 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
At Dinamo Zagreb, Mmaee played a key role in securing multiple Croatian league titles and featured in European competitions, including the UEFA Europa League and Champions League qualifiers. Prior to that, he played for Standard Liège and Sint-Truiden in Belgium, and for Ferencváros in Hungary, where he also won domestic silverware.
Qarabağ, known as the “Horses,” continue to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season and upcoming European qualifying rounds, where they aim to return to the group stage of a UEFA competition.
The club has dominated Azerbaijani football in recent years under head coach Gurban Gurbanov, and Mmaee’s arrival is expected to add depth and leadership to their defensive unit.
