Azerbaijani authorities released footage showing a Khankendi resident—identified as Karen Avanesyan (born 1967)—retrieving an assault rifle and grenades from a cache, before an alleged attempt to stage an armed provocation.
Police said Avanesyan was detained while approaching a public event area with a Kalashnikov-style rifle, four magazines, and five hand grenades.
During the arrest, he allegedly threw three grenades and opened fire; officers returned fire, wounding the suspect and taking him into custody. One police officer was injured.
A criminal case has been opened jointly by the Prosecutor General’s Office and the State Security Service. Investigative actions are ongoing, and Avanesyan is under medical supervision, officials said.
