Police Prevent Engagement Ceremony of 15-Year-Old Girl

Baku, August 16, 2025 — Law enforcement in Azerbaijan has intervened to stop the engagement of an underage girl in the village of Muğanlı, Şamaxı district.

According to police reports, authorities received information that a ceremony was being held for a 15-year-old girl, born in 2010, in violation of legal age requirements. Officers from the Şamaxı District Police Department arrived at the scene and halted the event.

Both families involved were summoned to the local police station, where officers conducted preventive conversations and explained the legal consequences of arranging marriage ceremonies for minors.

The girl’s father was charged under Article 189-1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, which addresses entering into marriage agreements involving persons under the age of sixteen. He now faces administrative responsibility.

Authorities emphasized that such interventions are part of ongoing efforts to protect minors from early marriages, a practice that remains a concern in some rural areas despite strict prohibitions under Azerbaijani law.
