LONDON, Aug. 15 – The historic peace deal signed in Washington between the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia could only have happened under former U.S. President Donald Trump, Azerbaijani Ambassador to the UK Elin Suleymanov told GB News.
“I believe President Trump genuinely tries to bring conflicts to an end. Essentially, he is a peacemaker and a dealmaker, and that’s very different from what others have sought,” Suleymanov said.
The diplomat argued that past U.S. administrations, while attempting to mediate in the South Caucasus, never made ending the conflict their primary objective. In contrast, he said, Trump’s approach was focused on tangible results, following a framework his team had applied since his first term.
Suleymanov emphasized that Trump’s peace initiatives were driven by the broader interests of the United States rather than partisan or administrative agendas.
“Peace benefits the United States as a country, not a specific administration or special interest groups. As a major global player, America gains from peace because it brings positive energy and fosters partnerships,” he said, noting that U.S. and Azerbaijani interests in regional peace and security align closely.
On August 8, during a trilateral summit in Washington, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, mediated by Trump, signed a seven-point joint declaration and initialed an Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations.
