Over 1,250 Individuals with Down Syndrome Registered in Azerbaijan, Majority Are Children

Baku, July 10 — Azerbaijan currently has 1,259 individuals diagnosed with Down syndrome registered at medical institutions across the country, according to data provided by the State Statistics Committee in response to an inquiry by Bizim.Media.

The majority of patients — 861 individuals — are children aged 0 to 13, while:

  • 176 fall within the 14–17 age group,

  • 131 are between 18 and 29,

  • and 91 are 30 years or older.

The figures highlight the youth-dominant demographic of those living with the genetic condition, which results from the presence of an extra copy of the 21st chromosome, known as trisomy 21.

Down syndrome is associated with developmental delays and varying degrees of intellectual disability, and early intervention remains critical to improving quality of life.

Medical experts continue to emphasize the need for inclusive education, social support, and specialized healthcare services tailored to the evolving needs of individuals with Down syndrome and their families in Azerbaijan.
