One Year Since AZAL Aircraft Was Downed by Russian Air Defenses

One year has passed since the crash of an aircraft operated by Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan.

On December 25, 2024, an Embraer 190 passenger jet operated by AZAL and flying flight J2-8243 from Baku to Grozny was subjected to external physical and technical impact while in the airspace of the Russian Federation. After losing control, the aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing near Aktau.

There were 67 people on board the aircraft. Thirty-eight people were killed, while 29 survived.

Crew members Igor Kshnyakin, Alexander Kalyaninov, and Hekume Aliyeva, who lost their lives in the crash, were posthumously awarded the title of National Hero of Azerbaijan.

According to preliminary findings, the aircraft crash resulted from external physical and technical interference that occurred in Russian airspace over the Grozny area. The circumstances of the incident remain the subject of ongoing legal and international scrutiny.
