Washington, August 7 – Starting September 2, 2025, most applicants for nonimmigrant U.S. visas — including those renewing their visas — will be required to attend an in-person interview with a consular officer, the U.S. Embassy in Azerbaijan announced, citing the official website of the U.S. State Department.
This change affects nearly all visa applicants, including children under 14 and adults over 79, who were previously often exempt from interviews.
Who is exempt from the interview requirement?
Holders of diplomatic and official visa categories, such as A-1, A-2, C-3 (excluding accompanying staff and domestic workers), G-1 through G-4, NATO-1 through NATO-6, and TECRO E-1

Applicants renewing a B-1, B-2, or combined B1/B2 visa (or a Border Crossing Card for Mexican citizens) within 12 months of expiration, provided they were at least 18 years old when the previous visa was issued
However, consular officers retain discretion to require an interview for any applicant if deemed necessary.
The new regulation replaces the simplified visa interview waiver system introduced on February 18, 2025.
