Baku, August 17 – Fresh details have surfaced regarding the arrest of Azerbaijani singer Raksana Ismayilova, who is facing serious fraud charges.
Fraud Allegations
According to reports, the case dates back to 2022, when Ismayilova allegedly promised to secure the release of an Azerbaijani businessman jailed in Moscow. Relatives of the businessman claim they transferred $520,000 to the artist in exchange for her assistance. However, the businessman was never released, and after repeated complaints, criminal proceedings were launched.
Ismayilova also stands accused of fraudulently obtaining gold jewelry valued at 35,000 manats.
She has been charged under Article 178.4 of Azerbaijan’s Criminal Code (fraud causing significant damage). If convicted, she faces 10 to 14 years in prison. The law, however, allows charges to be dropped if the full amount of damages is repaid along with state fees.

Defense Response
Ismayilova’s lawyer, Ilgar Rustamov, told Teleqraf that his client denies any wrongdoing.
“Raksana hanum is accused of fraud under Article 178, but she does not admit guilt. The dispute goes back to 2022 and involves only one complainant. This is purely a financial matter,” he said.
Rustamov added that Ismayilova had not been hiding from authorities, noting she frequently traveled abroad and returned to Azerbaijan. “Her latest visit has no connection to the current charges,” he stressed.
The lawyer confirmed that Ismayilova is currently held at the Sabunchu District Police Department under a four-month detention order. An appeal against the decision will be filed on August 18, with the defense seeking to have the order overturned. She is likely to be transferred to a pre-trial detention facility in the coming days.
