New AZAL Safety Policy Bans Powerbank Use in Cabin

Must read

Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) will introduce new rules on the transportation and use of portable charging devices (“powerbanks”) on its flights beginning November 20.

The carrier says the changes are aimed at strengthening in-flight safety and minimizing risks associated with lithium-ion batteries.

According to the AZAL press service, passengers will no longer be allowed to charge their smartphones using external powerbanks inside the aircraft cabin.

The airline says the decision aligns with international civil aviation standards and reflects its priority to ensure the safety of both passengers and crew.

Key Rules Under the New Policy:

  • Use of powerbanks inside the cabin is prohibited;

  • Powerbanks cannot be plugged into the aircraft’s power outlets;

  • Powerbanks may not be stored in overhead bins – they must remain with the passenger so crew can access them quickly if needed;

  • Only one factory-labeled powerbank with a capacity of up to 100 watt-hours (Wh) is allowed per passenger.

The rules follow international guidelines based on battery capacity. Devices up to 100 Wh may be carried in hand luggage. Powerbanks between 100 and 160 Wh require prior airline approval, and such devices are strictly banned from checked baggage.

AZAL advises passengers to immediately inform crew members if they notice any signs of malfunction – such as overheating, swelling, deformation, or unusual odor – from their powerbank.
