Netanyahu Calls Pope Francis After Israeli Strike Hits Gaza Church

VATICAN CITY, July 18, 2025 — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a phone conversation with Pope Francis following an Israeli shell striking the Church of the Holy Family in Gaza, the only Catholic church in the embattled enclave.

The Vatican press office confirmed the call, stating that the Pope reiterated his urgent call for a ceasefire, peace negotiations, and the protection of civilians.

“The Holy Father once again emphasized the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the imperative to safeguard places of worship, believers, and all residents of both Palestine and Israel,” the statement read.

The deadly incident, which Israeli authorities described as the result of a “misfired shell”, killed three people and injured nine, with three in critical condition. Netanyahu earlier expressed “regret” over the strike and said an investigation was underway.

“We remain committed to protecting civilians and holy sites,” the Israeli Prime Minister stated.

The conversation between the two leaders comes amid mounting international concern over the safety of Gaza’s dwindling Christian population and the broader civilian toll of the ongoing conflict. Pope Francis has consistently advocated for dialogue over violence, urging restraint from all parties.
