In a striking break from decades of political tension, Azerbaijan and Armenia have for the first time exchanged top marks at an international music contest – a gesture many see as one of the first small steps toward building trust and friendship between the two nations.
The symbolic moment unfolded at the Silk Way Star competition in Kazakhstan. An Azerbaijani juror awarded Armenian singer Saro Gevorgyan a perfect 10, while the Armenian judge responded in kind, giving the same score to Azerbaijani contestant Sabina Guluzade.
Though staged in the world of entertainment, the exchange resonated far beyond music. For two countries scarred by conflict, such gestures echo broader hopes of reconciliation.
Commentators noted how it recalls other rare images of warmth, such as the much-discussed photograph of Azerbaijan’s and Armenia’s first ladies standing side by side earlier this year – moments that suggest cultural and personal encounters can succeed where politics often stalls.
The opening round of Silk Way Star concluded on September 20, with 12 vocalists performing in their native languages. None were eliminated, ensuring all remain in the contest as it moves forward.
