Moldova Ready for Long-Term Gas Partnership with Azerbaijan

Moldova is open to exploring the possibility of entering into a long-term agreement with Azerbaijan for gas supplies.

This was stated by the Minister of Energy of Moldova, Dorin Junghietu, in an interview with Report.

He noted that the start of Azerbaijani gas supplies to Ukraine via the Trans-Balkan route opens a direct path for Moldova to receive this resource.

“In this context, the Republic of Moldova could also receive gas directly from Azerbaijan in the future, and Chisinau is open to considering the possibility of concluding a long-term agreement with the Azerbaijani supplier in this regard,” said Junghietu.

He added that signing such an agreement is just the first step.

“Concluding this type of agreement is part of bilateral commercial agreements. The next stage concerns negotiations about gas supplies between commercial companies operating in the Moldovan market, such as ‘Energocom’ or other licensed companies interested in purchasing Azerbaijani gas,” said the head of the ministry.

Junghietu mentioned that Moldova supports the liberalization of its domestic gas market, a process that began last year.

“Until it is completed, the priorities remain security of supply and consumer protection. In the long term, the goal is for every consumer to be able to choose their supplier independently, and we encourage the entry of new, reliable players into the market. Azerbaijan has already proven itself as a reliable partner in the energy sector,” emphasized the minister.
