Kazakhstan has proposed the launch of a special intergovernmental program aimed at preventing the continued shallowing of the Caspian Sea.
Speaking at the “International Year of Peace and Trust – 2025” forum in Ashgabat, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said the preservation and rational use of water resources has become a strategic and vital priority, Sputnik Kazakhstan reported.
Addressing the current condition of the Caspian Sea, Tokayev warned that if present trends continue, the process of depletion could soon become irreversible.
“This would inevitably trigger a chain reaction of environmental, socio-economic, and even political consequences,” the Kazakh president said. “Kazakhstan has put forward an initiative for a special intergovernmental program aimed at preventing the destruction of the ecosystem and the shallowing of the Caspian Sea. We call on the entire international community to support our efforts to preserve this unique body of water.”
Tokayev also emphasized that effective water diplomacy requires close coordination between states, noting that transboundary water challenges cannot be addressed in isolation.
