Kazakhstan Awaits U.S. Analysis in AZAL Plane Crash Investigation

Astana, August 7 – Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev says the country is still awaiting expert analysis from the United States as part of the ongoing investigation into the crash of an Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) aircraft near Aktau.

Speaking at a government briefing, Bozumbayev told reporters that a special online coordination meeting had been held with experts from Brazil, Russia, and Azerbaijan to discuss technical details, including the aircraft’s modular aviation block and GPS system.

“The aviation module was sent to Phoenix, Arizona, for analysis. We’re currently waiting for results from there. The documentation is still being studied, and three subcommittees are working on compiling their reports. Once the analysis is complete, the commission will begin drafting the final report. ICAO recommends wrapping up such investigations within a year. Since multiple countries are involved, this is not solely within our control—but we aim to finish by the end of this year,” Bozumbayev stated, as reported by Tengrinews.kz.

He added that part of the aircraft’s equipment remains abroad for further examination but is expected to return to Kazakhstan soon. With the analysis phase nearing completion, the commission will soon move to drafting the final conclusions.

Asked whether the investigation results could be expected by fall, Bozumbayev was cautious:
“Well, a few months from now would mean the end of the year.”
Pressed to clarify whether this meant September, October, or December, he replied:
“No, I can’t say more specifically.”

Bozumbayev assured that the government commission he heads will meet all requirements “to the letter and to the point” before the year’s end.
