BAKU, July 25, 2025 — Israel’s outgoing ambassador to Azerbaijan, George Deek, has praised the level of safety and social harmony experienced by the country’s Jewish community, drawing favorable comparisons to European capitals.
Speaking at his final press briefing before concluding his diplomatic mission, Deek described his experience in Baku as a “pleasant surprise,” noting, “The Jewish community here feels safer than in places like Beirut and even Paris.”
The ambassador highlighted Azerbaijan’s long-standing tradition of interethnic tolerance and peaceful coexistence, despite regional tensions.
“Azerbaijan reminds me of Israel — a nation thriving in a tough neighborhood, managing complex relationships with neighboring countries, and still emerging as a bridge between the Middle East and Europe.”
Deek also emphasized Azerbaijan’s growing role as a strategic energy supplier and its expanding cooperation with NATO, praising the country’s stability and resilience despite being surrounded by hostile neighbors.
In closing, Deek expressed admiration for Azerbaijani cuisine and shared his intention to return to the country with his family — this time as a tourist.
