Iran Tensions Push Up Trout Prices in Azerbaijan

Rising tensions in Iran have begun to affect food prices in Azerbaijan, with trout prices increasing noticeably at local fish markets, according to vendors.

Sellers report that trout, which previously sold for 12-13 manats per kilogram, is now priced at 14-16 manats, with some stalls quoting up to 17 manats. The increase is largely attributed to disruptions in imports from Iran, one of the key suppliers of trout to the Azerbaijani market.

Other types of fish have largely avoided price hikes. Carp continues to sell for around 7 manats, pelamid for 9 manats, and khasham ranges between 13 and 17 manats. Premium varieties remain significantly more expensive, with beluga priced at approximately 45 manats per kilogram and salmon at around 33 manats.

Market traders say demand remains strongest for trout and carp, though consumers are increasingly opting for cheaper alternatives as prices rise.

Commenting on recently approved fishing quotas, sellers argue that the measures are unlikely to have a major impact on prices, as much of the fish sold in Azerbaijan is imported rather than locally caught.

Analysts warn that if instability in the region persists, prices for imported fish may remain elevated in the near term.
