A total of 11,260 HIV-positive individuals have been officially registered in Azerbaijan since 1987, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health and the Republican AIDS Control Center.
Men account for 70% of all recorded cases, while women represent 30%, the ministry said.
Azerbaijan detected its first HIV case in 1987. Thanks to targeted epidemiological and prevention measures, the country remains among the nations with the lowest HIV prevalence in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, officials noted.
December 1 has been observed globally as World AIDS Day since 1988.
