ATHENS, July 24 — Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has warned that Athens could block Turkey’s participation in the European Union’s defense fund unless Ankara guarantees that its weapons will not be used against Greece.
“If Turkey continues to threaten Greece with war and questions our sovereignty over the Aegean Sea, then we will not allow its involvement in the EU’s defense programs,” Mitsotakis told AFP.
The remarks come in response to Germany’s reported agreement to supply Eurofighter jets to Turkey—an issue that has raised concern in Athens about potential shifts in regional military dynamics.
Mitsotakis stated that unless Ankara provides clear assurances, Greece will act to prevent Turkey from benefiting from European defense mechanisms, signaling rising tensions between the two NATO allies.
