Azerbaijan’s wrestlers secured two gold and one bronze medal at the U-17 World Beach Wrestling Championships held in Katerini, Greece. The tournament brought together 170 athletes from 26 countries.
Ten Azerbaijani athletes, coached by head trainer Oyan Nazeriani, took part, with four reaching the semifinals.
Ulviya Musayeva (55 kg) made history by becoming Azerbaijan’s first-ever female world champion in beach wrestling. She defeated a Polish opponent in the semifinals and overcame Japan in the final.
Nihad Suleymanli (80 kg) also delivered a dominant performance, beating an Iranian in the semifinal and a Georgian in the final to clinch gold.
In the men’s 90 kg category, Elgun Kerimli overpowered his Moldovan rival 5:0 to win bronze. Rashad Aliyev (70 kg) narrowly missed out on a medal, losing to a Georgian in the bronze match and finishing fourth.
Overall, Azerbaijan’s men’s team collected 62 points to place third worldwide. The women’s team, made up of just two athletes, finished joint 4th–6th with Moldova and Puerto Rico, scoring 25 points.
The championship was officiated by I-S category referee Sadi Guliyev of Azerbaijan.
