The Baku Military Court has extended by two months the pre-trial detention of Gakhrama Mammadov, a former chief assistant to Azerbaijan’s military attaché at the country’s Embassy in the United States, who was detained in Turkey with 70 kilograms of gold, Report says.
Turkish authorities apprehended Mammadov while he was traveling by taxi to an Istanbul hotel, allegedly to hand the gold bars to an accomplice.
One criminal case has been opened and the investigation is being conducted by the State Security Service.
Mammadov has been charged under the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan with:
Articles 12.1, 206.3.2; 12.1-1, 206.3.3 – smuggling committed by a citizen of Azerbaijan outside the country, by a group in prior collusion, using official position;
Articles 12.1-1, 341.1 – abuse of official powers outside the country.
