Baku, September 27, 2025
Today Azerbaijan bows its head in remembrance and pride. Five years have passed since the first day of the Patriotic War, when the nation rose as one to reclaim its land and honor its fallen.
On September 27, 2020, the Azerbaijani Army struck back after years of Armenian provocations, launching what became the 44-day Iron Fist operation. That day marked the beginning of the end of nearly three decades of occupation. In just a month and a half, villages, towns, and cities – once thought lost forever – returned to the homeland.

Every address from President Ilham Aliyev during those weeks became a rallying cry, uniting the people in a single fist.
The liberation of Shusha on November 8 was the moment of triumph, forcing Armenia to sign the act of capitulation. A war that had dragged on for generations was ended in 44 days.
Since then, Azerbaijan has not only restored its territorial integrity but also begun breathing life back into the liberated lands. Roads, airports, and homes rise again, and families are preparing to return. Yet today is not only about victory – it is about memory.
Memorial Day, established by presidential decree, is the day the nation honors its martyrs. At noon, the country pauses for a minute of silence, united in respect.
