BAKU — September 2, 2025. Azerbaijan’s four-month fishing moratorium, in place since May 1 to protect stocks and spawning, has ended — and market prices are expected to drift lower as fresh catch returns.
Fish seller Ilkin Novruzov says supply should rise sharply: “Compared with previous years, availability looks more optimistic, even though summer usually brings some shortages.” During the ban, the market relied on imports from Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Türkiye, and Norway. With the moratorium lifted, active fishing in the Caspian Sea, rivers and other waterways will boost domestic supply and “inevitably push prices down,” he added.
