Iran and Turkey have announced a new round of diplomatic and economic initiatives following talks between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan in Tehran.
The meeting, reported by TasnimNews and other Iranian outlets, focused on border cooperation, energy security, and a wide range of regional issues.
Iran to Open a New Consulate General in Van
The two sides confirmed that Iran will soon open a new Consulate General in the Turkish city of Van. According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the consulate will not only provide routine services but also play a “key role” in strengthening cooperation between border provinces.
The ministers also discussed the establishment of joint free economic zones and the activation of a new border crossing aimed at boosting trade and mobility.
Regional Crisis Talks: Gaza and Syria
Araghchi and Fidan devoted a significant portion of the meeting to regional security, particularly the situation in Gaza. Both officials stressed the importance of coordinated efforts to halt hostilities in the enclave.
The ministers also reiterated that Syria’s stability depends on preserving its territorial integrity, which Tehran argues is “threatened by Israeli actions.”
Tehran Ready to Extend Gas Contract With Turkey
During a joint press briefing, Araghchi stated that Iran is prepared to extend its long-standing natural gas contract with Turkey and expand cooperation in electricity supply.
The current agreement – which provides for the annual delivery of 10 billion cubic meters of gas – expires in November 2026. Negotiations on the terms of a new contract are already underway.
Araghchi added that bilateral trade remains “far below potential” and called for the removal of investment and trade barriers.
Fidan: Turkey Will Continue Supporting Iran
Following the talks, Turkish FM Hakan Fidan emphasized that international legal disputes involving Iran should be resolved through dialogue. He argued that Iran’s reintegration into the international community is crucial for the country’s economic development.
Fidan reaffirmed Turkey’s long-standing support for Iran’s position on nuclear issues and described the removal of “unjust sanctions” as essential for regional stability.
Meeting With President Pezeshkian
Later in the day, Fidan was received by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. No details about their conversation were released.
During the visit, the Turkish foreign minister also met with Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi and Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.
