BAKU, October 2, 2025
One of the biggest challenges for public transport in large cities is buses getting stuck in traffic jams. Sharing the same lanes as private vehicles slows service, disrupts schedules, and forces passengers to waste valuable time.
To address this, Baku has expanded the use of dedicated bus lanes, allowing public transport to bypass congestion and maintain faster, more reliable schedules.
According to the Azerbaijan Land Transport Agency (AYNA), bus operations and intervals are planned around passenger demand. During peak hours, traffic congestion can stretch headways between buses. In such cases, operators are instructed to add extra buses to routes to reduce crowding and maintain service.
Currently, Baku has over 112 kilometers of bus lanes across nearly 40 streets and avenues. These lanes carry about 1 million passengers daily in the capital and surrounding areas. Officials report that average bus speeds have increased, and travel times on several routes have been reduced by 12–22 minutes thanks to the dedicated lanes.
Transport experts say the measure not only saves time but also improves the overall efficiency of the public transport system, helping buses stick to timetables and making them a more attractive alternative to private cars.
