Questions have emerged over the quality of potatoes sold at some markets, following expert claims that so-called “technical” potato varieties may be entering retail circulation.
Food expert Mubariz Valiyev says that among imported potato varieties there are types originally produced for industrial processing or animal feed rather than direct human consumption.
According to him, these potatoes are typically used for starch production and may contain a significantly higher starch content than table potatoes.
Valiyev notes that such potatoes can sometimes be identified by their appearance. They are often larger, have sharper or irregular shapes, thicker skin, and darker or uneven coloring when cut. Potatoes intended for food use generally have thinner skins and a more uniform texture.
Market vendors interviewed during the survey said they were not aware of any distinction between “technical” and food-grade potatoes, stating that the products they sell are standard potatoes sourced both locally and from abroad.
In response to the claims, the Food Safety Agency of Azerbaijan stated that all food products, including potatoes, are allowed onto the market only after meeting existing regulatory requirements. The agency emphasized that imported potatoes undergo inspection and are cleared for circulation only if they comply with food safety standards.
According to the agency, potatoes that are unfit for human consumption are not permitted to be sold at markets.
While expert opinions and official statements differ, specialists advise consumers to remain attentive when selecting produce and to inquire about product origin if concerns arise.
